Dr. Heinrichs’ earned his MD degree with Honors in his native state of Oklahoma, completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wayne State University, Detroit MI, and earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biochemistry at the University of Oregon Health Sciences campus.
His first academic position (1967) was at the University of Washington. In 1976, Dr. Heinrichs was appointed Professor and Chairman of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Stanford University where he advanced laparoscopic surgery for two decades. During 1994–2008, he served as Associate Director of SUMMIT, Stanford’s Medical Media and Information Technology group, and during the last two yrs, as Exec. Medical Officer of Innovation in Learning, Inc.
He is a Josiah Macy, Jr. Faculty Fellow, an ACOG First Place Awardee for Research, and a Satava Awardee by the Medicine Meets Virtual Reality organization. He has served as Chair of the NIH HED Study Section, and is VP of AAGL’s Council of Gynecologic Endoscopy. IIL Inc.’s new virtual learning environment, CliniSpace, was awarded First Prize in the category of “Artificial Intelligence in Training” and the Grand Prize in the Federal Virtual Worlds Challenge at GameTech 2011 (http://fvwc.army.mil/index.php).
